Arrive Helsinki and transfer to your hotel.
The festive season’s a special time to visit Helsinki – streets are illuminated with myriads of lights, store fronts are dressed with colourful Christmas displays and the air’s filled with a special magic. Depending on the Hockey League schedule, you may be able to attend an ice hockey game this evening.
Helsinki is a beautiful city – compact and easy to move around. Join a guided sightseeing tour this morning taking in the most interesting parts of Helsinki – the historical centre, the impressive library, the City Hall, Parliament buildings and unique Temppeliaukio Church (Rock Church).
Evening departure by overnight train to Rovaniemi.
Mid morning arrival in Rovaniemi and transfer to Pyhätunturi, a one and a half hour drive so sit back, relax and enjoy the views of the surrounding countryside.
Dinner this evening will be a sweeping selection of hot and cold traditional Finnish Christmas fare. Best save your appetite!
It’s Christmas Day and Santa’s rest day. But, word has it that since we’ve travelled from faraway, he’ll make an exception and allow us to come to his house to meet him. But, be warned – the visit’s by invitation only, reserved for those on the nice list. How to make the list? Well, that depends entirely how the elves rate your behaviour during the year so better be on your best behaviour when they’re around.
Before meeting Santa it may be a good idea to decorate some traditional Finnish Christmas pipari biscuits (his favorite treat the elves report) as a present for him.
After dinner this evening, take a walk in search of the Northern Lights.
Time to meet Lapland’s most famous animal – reindeers! Set off on a cosy sedate sleigh ride through the snow laden forest enjoying the silence and beauty of your pristine surroundings. After your sleigh ride, take the chance to travel to the top of the fell (small mountain) on the chair lift for spectacular views of the surrounding countryside, perfect for those envy-inducing Instagram posts. If you start to feel chilly, pop into the cosy Tsokka restaurant for a warm drink.
Eager to try husky mushing? Huskies are a strong spirited bunch, eager to get going and as a team, able to pull up to five times their weight . After an introduction to the huskies and a quick driving course, it’s time to test your skills; it’s time to head off! Pulled by your own husky team and with a passenger in your sleigh; expect a speedy ride—hold on to your beanie!
After lunch, grab your toboggan and head for the toboggan slopes or try downhill, cross country skiing or snowshoe walking.
After breakfast this morning, head off to the lake for a spot of ice fishing. Armed with a giant metal corkscrew, drill a hole in the ice, drop you line in and wait for a bite. Enjoy hot drinks and sausages around the fire.
Next up, the exhilarating experience of snowmobiling. After gearing up and having a safety talk from your guide, set off across the frozen lake and weave your way through snowy forests. Children will travel in a sleigh behind the guide. Drivers must be in possession of valid driving licence.
Sadly your time in Pyhatunturi has come to an end but the magic’s not over yet. After checking out and transferring to Rovaniemi, spend time in Santa Village.
Afternoon transfer to airport or station depending on which method of transport you choose. Please note this is not included but can be arranged on request.
