Of nature’s many spectacular sights the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights)  is undoubtedly one of the most awe inspiring. Finnish folklore tells of a fire fox scampering across the snow, sending millions of snowflakes adrift as his tail sweeps across the snow. It’s these snowflakes which fill the sky with celestial lights creating the Aurora Borealis. To increase your chances of seeing the Lights, you’ll be accommodated in the countryside away from city light pollution and spend one night in an Aurora hut.

Itinerary

Day 1Arrive Ivalo, Lapland - Wilderness Hotel

We’ll welcome you at the airport and transfer you to your Wilderness Hotel. A programme schedule will be provided before dinner so you can prepare yourself for the fun to come. Depending on your arrival time, cold weather gear is given to you either upon arrival or the following day.

Day 2Wilderness Hotel

Today you’ll meet Lapland’s most famous animal – reindeers!. After a welcome from the reindeer herder you’ll have a presentation on the Sámi culture and the life of a reindeer herder and have a chance to feed the reindeer by hand. Then, comfortably seated in a sleigh, enjoy a sedate ride through the forest – so sedate you may even nod off. To round off your outdoor experience and seated around a fire, tuck into a bowl of steaming soup.

After dinner this evening, comfortably seated in a sledge pulled by the guide’s snowmobile, you can enjoy the northern sky all the way to the camp area. With city light pollution to spoil your views of the sky, this is a wonderful pristine place to experience Nature’s fireworks, the Aurora Borealis. Relax around the fire with a hot drink whilst your guide explains this amazing natural phenomenon.

Day 3Wilderness Hotel

Snowmobiling’s big time fun. With unlimited wilderness, numerous tracks and beautiful scenery, it’s another perfect outdoor experience. After instruction on safety and driving a snowmobile, set off on what will be an exhilarating ride and yet another memorable experience.

Day 4Wilderness Hotel

The forest’s a beautiful winter wonderland, the silence therapeutic and you’ll be taking a walk through the forest this morning with your guide. Along the way, your guide will explain life in this environment. Take a break and relax around the fire with hot drinks and lunch. This eco-activity’s perfect for photographers and nature lovers.

Later today once darkness sets in, set off on your snowmobile on an Aurora hunting expedition. The drive takes you through the surrounding areas, stopping in open places where the forests don’t obscure the view of the sky. The distance you travel is dictated by the weather conditions. Who knows, Nature willing, this could be the night of spectacular viewings.

Day 5Wilderness Hotel

Day at leisure for optional activities. Icefishing anyone? Seated in a sleigh drawn by a snowmobile, head off on the frozen lake to try ice fishing. Using your giant corkscrew, drill a hole in the ice, drop your line and hope your bait’s look good enough to lure a big one. During the activity you’ll have warm drinks and lunch around the fire. And, if you’re lucky, it could even be your catch of the day!

The best way to end an active day is the Finnish way – take a sauna. There’s no correct sauna temperature, just what’s comfortable for you. If you’re feel adventurous, try what the Finns do and take a roll in the snow to cool off.

Day 6Wilderness Hotel

Feeling energetic and ready to try the most traditional of Finnish winter sports? Under instruction from your guide, clip your boots onto your cross country skis and off you go, ‘skating’ along on the groomed ski tracks. Once you get the hang of it, you’ll be hooked and ready for more.

By this time you’re going to be an expert on the Northern Lights and what could be a more perfect way to end a perfect stay than to spend your final night with the extraordinary experience of sleeping in an Aurora Hut on the lake. It’s a perfect place for a clear view of the star-filled sky and Northern Lights from the comfort of your own bed. The environmentally friendly Aurora Hut’s equipped with double bed and eco-toilet. Upgrade to Aurora Hut on request.
